Applications sought for OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial Scholarships
The University of Aberdeen is inviting applications for scholarships to its full range of safety engineering programmes, worth £6000 each.
OPITO, the global, not-for-profit, skills body for the energy industry, funds two scholarships for students with an offer of admission to any of the following Masters programmes:
MSc in Safety and Reliability Engineering for Oil and Gas
MSc in Safety and Reliability Engineering
MSc Process Safety
The OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships will be open to students participating in any of the one year full-time degree programmes starting in September, with the added requirement that their dissertations address the issue of ‘safety in the oil and gas industry’.
Professor Igor Guz, Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen, said: “This is the first time that the OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships have been offered across our full range of safety engineering MSc programmes, and we are grateful to OPITO for their continued support.
“As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster, safety remains one of the most important areas of focus for the oil and gas industry.
“Our Masters degrees reflect the continuing high demand for specialist knowledge, and by working alongside our industrial partners our graduates receive a comprehensive grounding in all aspects of safety engineering, from technical and regulatory, to human factors.
“As the global skills body for the energy industry, OPITO is an organisation that we are proud to work alongside to offer these scholarships. We encourage any students who are interested in applying to get in touch.”
OPITO chief executive, John McDonald, said: “Any accident offshore reminds us that this industry operates in some of the harshest, most hostile, and therefore hazardous environments for workers in the world.
“Bringing a consistent approach to basic safety training remains the focus for OPITO and it’s essential that the next generation have opportunities like the Piper Alpha Memorial Scholarships to pursue fresh, meaningful ideas. We look forward to seeing what safety practices the Masters students who are applying plan to research.”
