OIL and gas industry skills organisation OPITO were shortlisted for the Best Skills Initiative of the Year 2015 for their partnered event with East Norfolk College at the East of England Energy Group (EEEGR) awards last night.
OPITO, the industry-funded skills organisation and the sixth form college were recognised for the continued success of their Platform of Opportunity Week, a bespoke energy work experience programme which took place earlier this year following a successful pilot in the east of England in 2014.
The event saw 175 pupils studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects take part in structured work experience placement at energy sector businesses across Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft for one week in April this year.
“We are very proud to have been shortlisted in such a strong category with other fantastic skills initiatives being undertaken in other parts of the industry,” said OPITO regional development manager Liz Davis-Smith.
“Platform of Opportunity has given hundreds of STEM pupils in the East of England the chance to engage with businesses in the energy industry and be inspired to pursue a career in the sector when they leave school.
“We would like to congratulate all the winners from last night, and thank EEEGR for their consideration,” said Ms Davis-Smith.
Sue Cook, Director of Progression and Employability at East Norfolk Sixth Form College said "We were delighted to work with Liz Davis-Smith and OPITO for the second year running, exposing students from local schools and colleges to the fantastic progression opportunities within the Oil and Gas sector."
