21st September 2016
STUDENTS from across 65 schools and colleges in the north-east of England will be engaging with oil and gas companies who have some of the most coveted talent programmes in the industry as part of a major skills event being held today and tomorrow at the Metro Newcastle Arena (21st and 22nd September).
The 15 to 18-year olds from Sunderland, Northumberland, Durham, Newcastle, North and South Tyneside, Darlington, Hartlepool, and Gateshead will be out in force at North East Skills 2016 to research and experience which businesses and careers they should consider as they head towards the next stage of their working lives.
OPITO’s dynamic careers initiative Energise Your Future is taking place as part of the exhibition and will see GE Oil & Gas, Hydrasun, JDR Cables, Soil Machine Dynamic and TDR Training highlight their graduate and apprenticeship schemes helping the next generation to recognise the opportunities the energy sector holds and how to unlock their potential for entering them.
Employees from these firms will also be encouraging students to take part in planned interactive activities at their stands such as flying a simulated Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) underwater, building a bridge and testing its weight capacity.
OPITO is the oil and gas industry skills organisation. Regional business and communications manager Liz Davis-Smith said: “The North East Skills 2016 is a great event that enables young people to expand their horizons and explore how their passions and studies could translate into their dream career.
“The Energise Your Future zone will provide students with the opportunity to meet people working at the companies they aspire to. This opens a direct dialogue where so much can be gained by both parties.
“Although the industry is still experiencing more challenging times due to the downturn, we have learned from similar periods in the past that companies need to keep bringing in the next generation. This passing on of skills and knowledge is vital to the future of our industry.
Dionne Kennedy, learning and development leader at GE Oil & Gas said: “The ‘Energise Your Future’ zone is a great opportunity for GE Oil & Gas to showcase its business to the students in the North East. We want to encourage the young talent of the North East to consider how exciting a future in engineering can be, and to educate and inspire with an insight into our talent programmes.
“At the exhibition we will be displaying samples of our products and will also be running a few fun desk top exercises. These will provide in insight into some basic engineering principles and really bring the subject to life.”
