THE ‘master thief’, a psychologist, an HSE leader and a digital learning technologies expert will be among the speakers for the seventh annual OPITO Safety and Competence Conference - OSCC 2016 - when the conference makes its debut in Malaysia later this year.

High-profile speakers Hamish Taylor, a renowned business innovator, and New Zealand psychologist Ross Gilmour will be joined by a panel of industry leaders at the world’s only conference focused on safety and competency in the oil and gas sector.

OSCC, which is moving to a new location in Kuala Lumpur for the first time this year, will challenge current thinking on the regulation, maintenance and delivery of safety training and competence standards to ensure the global industry is “Fit for the Future”.

Delegates will hear how technology can create real efficiencies in training and assessment processes; and look at how the industry can bring innovation to the way it trains people to go to work and get home safely.

Hamish Taylor has an award winning record of driving innovation and change in a diverse range of environments. Dubbed the “master thief” due to his record of “stealing” ideas from one sector to use in another, he was trained in brand management at Procter and Gamble before going on to be a management consultant at Price Waterhouse, head of brands at British Airways, CEO of Eurostar and CEO of Sainsburys Bank – all before he was 40. In each case, he left behind a record of significant growth triggered by a willingness to challenge industry and organisation norms and place the customer at the core of all activities.

Ross Gilmour is a qualified and registered psychologist who provides training and consultancy services to organisations in the people skills arena. He conducts programmes on how to create effective safety cultures and how to turn safe behaviours into subconscious actions. His clients include government departments, SOEs, multi-national corporations and a range of international businesses both large and small. He also delivers safety training programmes to companies associated with the oil and gas industry in the United Kingdom, Europe, Middle East, Asia, Australia and Canada.

They will be joined by Gordon Ballard, executive director of the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP); John Christian, Asia Pacific corporate HSE lead for Technip Malaysia; Simon Durkin, managing director for Sarawak Shell Berhad and Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited; and Robert Morgan, chairman of global digital learning technologies leader Atlas Knowledge Group, at the one-day event which is expected to attract over international 450 delegates and 30 exhibitors.

David Doig, group chief executive for OPITO said: “The oil and gas industry is facing challenges like never before. Globalisation, geopolitical events and environmental change influence and affect us more now than at any other time in our history. The industry will adapt as it always has done, indeed a paradigm shift is already underway, where smart businesses know there is an opportunity for reinvention.

“We are pleased to have brought together this diverse group of speakers who we believe will bring new insights and perspective to the major issues facing our industry today. We hope the global oil and gas community will join us in sharing their knowledge and experience as we seek to re-set the skills and competence landscape to ensure the industry is fit for the future.”

The OSCC is the only global event focused on debating the issues around safety and competency in oil and gas. Devised by international training standards body OPITO as part of its drive for common global standards, it brings together industry leaders, government bodies, regulators and training providers to share new thinking and best practice.

OSCC 2016 takes place on Wednesday, November 16th 2016 at The Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia. Registrations are now open and places can be booked online at http://www.opito.com/oscc-conference
