Powering the Future

In 2015, Glasgow Science Centre opened its Powering the Future exhibition, shining a spotlight on one of the biggest challenges facing modern society – the future of the UK’s energy supply.

The exhibition raises awareness of the science and engineering behind an energy future that is affordable, secure and cleaner. Creating an effective platform to build appreciation of the critical role of the UK energy sector and the challenges faced in balancing energy supply and demand.

Powering the Future is a hands-on, highly interactive exhibition that provides a unique opportunity for both the public and school children to immerse themselves in the science underpinning the critical issues related to energy supply and to understand the problems and challenges we face. Consisting of over 70 exhibits and interactive panels, the exhibition is helping to increase knowledge levels and understanding around the energy mix.

Powering the Future on Tour launched in March 2019 and will support over 94,000 schoolchildren and adults over the next three years in understanding different types of energy and where it comes from. The mobile version of the exhibition will visit primary and secondary schools throughout Scotland, delivering inspiring activities to engage school pupils and meet the needs of teachers delivering the Curriculum for Excellence.

OPITO joins the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, SSE, Engineering Physical Science Research Council, National Grid, EDF Energy, Skills Development Scotland, Scottish Power Energy Network and Doosan Babcock as an exhibition partner. This is the first time that all sectors of the energy industry, policy makers and government agencies have come together to present unbiased and apolitical information to highlight the challenges we face with future energy supply.
