The Petroleum Processing Technology Series is designed to give a broad understanding of the operational techniques of petroleum processing, and the function and construction of the plant and equipment used in the processing of petroleum reservoir fluids.

The series consists of 10 modules which include workbooks and a ‘Guide to open learning’:

These self study modules enable the candidate to select learning materials that suit his or her own particular requirements. Modules can be studied at the candidates own pace and should be studied in the order set out. The study time needed will vary from one module to another, and from one individual to another – we recommend between 20 - 40 hours for each module.

Candidates can register for modules individually or enrol for the complete series – modules are non-transferrable and can only be assigned to one candidate.  

Each module is assessed by examination and an individual certificate endorsed by City and Guilds awarded to successful candidates. Each exam which is passed successfully will contribute to one certificate of unit credit towards ‘The Certificate in Petroleum Processing Technology’. The certificate will be awarded after all 10 Certificates of Unit Credit have been accumulated.

Exams

There is a written exam at the end of each module. 

Exams can be held any time at an approved venue  i.e. there is no set time limit between starting a module and sitting the exam.  

When a candidate is ready to take the exam an invigilator must be appointed on their behalf. The ‘Invigilator’ may be a Training Manager, OIM or Senior Manager. The invigilator is responsible for the receipt of the exam papers, security of the papers, invigilation of the exam and return of the paper. 

The invigilator must contact our team at the UK office to arrange the dispatch of exams.  Included with the papers will be an invigilation form for signature of the invigilator and rules and procedures for the exam.  

Candidates may sit the exam, free of charge at our offices at Minerva House. If this is not possible, then we suggest you contact your local college or learning centre to arrange to sit the exam on their premises. These arrangements must be made by the candidate. Some colleges may charge an invigilation and room hire fee which the candidate will be responsible for. 

The examination is a two hour closed book written exam. Section A has 20 short questions similar to the Test Yourself in the books. Section B comprises of three questions of which two must be answered – these require good, neat, correctly labelled drawings and a good descriptor.

Pass Marks: 

60%-74% - Pass

75%-84% - Credit

85%-100% - Distinction 

‘Test Yourself’ questions are available in the workbooks to help you prepare for your exams. 

There is no registration or examination fee. However, in order to be registered to sit the exam, the candidate must have purchased each module.

If candidates do not achieve the required pass mark (60%) a re-sit exam can be arranged at no extra cost, only a pass grade will be awarded irrespective of the result. Should candidates require a re-sit of the same module more than once, there will be an examination fee of £30.00.

 

Exam Tips

The examination is a two hour closed book written exam.

Section A

Section A comprises of 20 short answer questions similar to the Test Yourself section in the workbooks.

  • Read and understand what is being asked by the questions.
  • Some questions have more than one answer.
  • Check your answer for errors.

Section B

Section B comprises of three questions of which two must be answered (25 marks each split approx. 10 marks for the diagram, 15 for description) – these require good, neat, correctly labelled drawings and a good descriptor. All questions in the paper relate to the information given in the workbooks.

  • It may seem obvious, but when sitting exams, you need to answer the questions set – all too often, students spot key words in an exam question and then write all they know about that topic without first taking the time to understand what the question is asking them to do. Before you write anything in the exam, read the questions carefully and plan your answers; it is always apparent who has spent a few minutes planning their work as these answers are presented in a more coherent and professional manner. This being the case, whatever you present must be legible, credible and it must answer the question set.
  • Ensure you are reporting on the correct process system and your sketches reflect this.
    Giving brief or inadequate reports or descriptions in you answer will lose marks, as will inaccurate or poor drawings.
  • Writing should be legible and abbreviations avoided as they may be local to your work place only.
  • The only piping and valve symbols acceptable are those depicted in your P.O.L study book. Marks will be deducted for incorrect symbols.

Do not assume that the marker will understand references or accept sections omitted because they seem obvious. Reports on the process or equipment should be fully explained and the operation shown clearly on your sketch.

Modules are £145 (£135 for digital version) each with the exception of:

Petroleum Gas Compression  £220 (£210 for digital version)
